Junior Master Gardeners

The Junior Master Gardener® Program is a youth gardening program sponsored by the Hillsborough Extension Service/University of Florida. JMG uses novel “hands-on” learning experiences that promote a love of gardening and an appreciation of the environment. JMG also inspires kids to be involved in their community through service and leadership development projects and rewards them with certification and recognition.

Who can be a Junior Master Gardener?

The JMG program can be used by many different types of youth groups and ages:
Level 1: Grades 3-5
Level 2: Grades 6-8

JMG groups are organized through public/private schools, home school groups, and after-school programs. The curriculum is appropriate for scouts, 4-H Clubs, YMCA activities and summer programs.

 

 

 

 

Do I have to be a Master Gardener to be a JMG Leader?

No, we only ask that the leader/teacher be willing to work with kids. If a leader needs gardening resources and information, they can contact us (Hillsborough Extension Service) for help.

 

 

 

 

What is the JMG Curriculum?

Youth handbooks and leader/teacher guides support the program. Review and loaner copies are available from the Hillsborough Extension Service. To purchase materials, call toll free: (888) JMG KIDS or order from the online JMG Shop: www.jmgkids.org. Texas A & M University created the excellent JMG curriculum which is activity-based and flexible. The “hands-on,” fun activities can be customized to meet the group’s interest and needs.

 

 

 

 

How do I start a Group?

1. Have a minimum of five kids in a group.
2. Have one or more adults leaders for the group.
3. Have a suitable meeting facility (i.e. classroom, garden, park, etc).
4. Fill out the enrollment packet (call Hillsborough Extension Service or download from the JMG Website) and send it in to register your group.
